Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion is supporting proposals put forward by Worcestershire County Council to transition to a unitary authority.
In a letter to the government’s minister for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Jim McMahon OBE MP, the PCC highlights now is the right time for change on both a local and national level.
Whilst respecting and valuing the work done by district authorities in Worcestershire, the potential opportunities this change will deliver are significant.
With more than 80% of local services already under the umbrella of the county council, becoming a single authority will enable a more integrated approach to services like planning as well as delivering significant efficiencies, benefiting local communities.
Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “District councils do brilliant work in local communities, and I have indeed seen their value first-hand as former leader of Wyre Forest District Council but it’s time for change.
“As the public’s voice in policing, I have sent my letter of support as I fully back proposals in Worcestershire as I believe it will deliver significant benefits for our communities.
“I already work closely with local councils to tackle policing concerns and deliver provisions for victims, but this move will align Worcestershire with the rest of West Mercia, making it easier to deliver and integrate services and systems across the three counties.”
