More than 100 town and parish councils have completed Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion’s latest annual survey, which provides a helpful insight into the views of local communities.

Looking to drive change in local communities, the PCC will use this feedback, along with West Mercia Police, to shape future activity.

Findings include –

  • Over two-thirds of councils in Shropshire reported that police visibility is poor/very poor which is much higher than the West Mercia average.

With rural crime being more likely to be perceived as a fairly/very big problem by Shropshire councils than other areas in West Mercia.

  • Whereas Telford councils were more likely to believe ASB is a fairly big problem than the West Mercia average, contrast to 2023 where councils in Telford were less likely to believe ASB and crime was a problem.

Councils in Telford and Wrekin were twice as likely to believe that the police work well with the council to address local crime issues.

PCC John Campion said: “I value hearing from town and parish councils as they have a strong understanding of the issues in the communities they serve.

“The responses show a mixed picture and it’s clear there’s much more that needs to be done. I have ensured West Mercia Police has the resources and tools it needs; my challenge to the Chief Constable is ensuring that investment is being felt by local communities.

“As PCC, I will use all the powers available to me to support and challenge West Mercia Police to ensure progress, councils are calling for, is delivered.”

Local Policing Chief Superintendent Edd Williams said: “We welcome the findings of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s town and parish council survey. The survey provides a valuable insight into the views and concerns of our local communities and help us to fully understand the issues that are affecting them. We take on board the results and are committed to continually improving the service we deliver.”
